APM Competence Framework
This is a framework to provide a common independent reference for all organisations and project professionals. It was developed to support the profession as it expands and the roles you can undertake develop. The competencies relate to the different functions and uses terminology to indicate how they apply across all four disciplines.
With this framework you can assess the capabilities of an organisation across all of its functions and enables management to plan for development in a common way.
The new has been established to help project managers and other project organisers to assess their current ability against a standard baseline. It looks for evidence in 2 areas; Application (Demonstrating actions and behaviours) and Knowledge (Demonstrating understanding).
There are 3 main resources that can be accessed:
Competences - 27 competences, each based around the outcomes that professionals need to achieve.
Role Profiles - 14 role profiles across project, programme, portfolio management and PMO, measured against a rating scale for the specific competences that are relevant to each role.
Rating scale - The scoring system for assessment of mastery uses a 5 point scale and requires separate assessment of application and knowledge.
PMQ takes its guidance from the APM Body of Knowledge, a continually updated resource of definitions, knowledge and practice which sets the standard for project, programme and portfolio management in the profession. While not a methodology per se, PMQ covers the following areas from the Body of Knowledge necessary for a project to be handled correctly:
