Project Management Qualification has been created by APM (Association of Project Management), a British body for project professionals that was first formed in 1972 with the original name the Association of Project Managers. APM changed its name in 1996 to reflect its growing interest in the project management industry. In this decade, they also introduced qualifications for project management, the first of which was CPM (Certificated Project Manager) in 1992.
PMQ was launched in June 1996, intended to be a lower level qualification which was easier to get than the difficult CPM, so that more people could join the association and experience its benefits. PMQ became a massive success, causing membership levels to surge in the following two years.
PMQ was originally named APMP: The APM Project Management Qualification. APM changed the name to APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) in November 2016, in order to better fit in among their other project management qualifications.
PFQ was also renamed in November 2016. It was orginally called Introductory Certificae: The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification.
These qualificiations were renamed in November 2016 to clarify how they linked together with the Project Professional Qualification (PPQ) to form a learning pathway for Project Managers. The name change also allows for these qualifications to be easily found on the internet.
