There are 3 universities in the city of Bujumbura. It is the home of the University of Burundi, Hope Africa University and Université du Lac Tanganyika. The University of Burundi is the only publicly funded university in the country but it is in need of a lot of improvements as a lot of the facilities have deteriorated due to civil war.
