What Organisations Use PMP® credential holders?

Company: IBM

Sector: IT

IBM, the world’s largest technology services company, employs more PMP® certified individuals than any other organisation in the world. In fact, PMP® certifications are now eligibility requirements for the higher-ranked positions within their internal program and 90% of their Project Managers have said that the certification continually helps them within their job. IBM utilise the framework due to the reliance of their business interactions on projects being punctual, productive, and within budget. In 2009, despite the turbulent economic crisis, IBM had a record year with their highest ever pre-tax earnings and cash flow - it is no coincidence that such improved figures occurred in parallel with their enhanced project management capabilities.

Company: Department of Defence (US Military)

Sector: Government and Defence

The Department of Defence required a proficient Project Manager to lead a complete revamp of the Military Health System, hence they utilised a certified manager and followed the framework. Utilising the skills of industrial hygienists, the project ensured the real-time availability of data and information that is crucial to the safety of military personnel, meaning that there is no time delay when accessing data in a crisis situation. In accordance with the framework’s monitoring and controlling process, the Department of Defence initiated a reviewing process to assess the status of the system and to evaluate whether more changes were required. Due to the manner in which the project was organised, the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH) project was completed within time and budget, in addition to:

  • 1.4 million lines of code, 880 individual web pages, and 565 database tables

  • Developed a system capable of handling 20,000 users, and scalable to 70,000

  • Reduced the access time to patient medical data which can prevent defence issues from spiralling in the case of an emergency

  • Enhanced military organisation and functionality in response to terrorism and environmental hazards

  • A system that now adheres to the government’s urgency requirements of Defence systems

Company: du Telecom and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.

Sector: Telecommunications

Du Telecom provides IPTV, mobile telephone, and broadband connectivity services to individuals throughout the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - accounting for a 40% market share within the region. In 2013, Du and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to enable the development of a best practice guidance concerning portfolio and project management concepts, through transferring knowledge and research findings. The two companies required clarity and a clear project plan to allow parallel improvements to their business share and management techniques. Hence, the framework was utilised to establish a clear project life-cycle plan, from initiation to close, to ensure that resources were utilised efficiently and that a clear structure could be followed to guarantee that the two company’s business interests and objectives were at the forefront of all activities. The project revealed that the utilisation of captured information was crucial, rather than purely focusing on data collection itself. The project bridged the gap between applicable strategy and real-life projects, which enabled:

  • Project results adhered to the quality requirements of stakeholders and customers

  • Projects to be completed within the expected time frame, costs, and resource utilisation

  • Management that enabled the customer experience to be significantly elevated
