NLP Communication Model

This is a model of how we communicate and interact with others. This model shows how we process information and how this affects what we do with the information which in turn affects our behaviours.

• External event – the information that comes in that needs to be processed.
• Internal processing procedure: Delete, distort, generalise – paying attention to one aspect and not another (deletion), misrepresentation of what really happened by changing the experience of our sensory data (distortion) and making assumptions of other experience due to other experiences (generalisation).
• Filters – time/space, matter/energy, language, memories, decisions, meta programmes, values and beliefs and attitudes. These filters are how we delete, distort and generalise outside information.
• Internal representation - external event comes in through the sensory input channels and is filtered and managed by our neurology.
• State - refers to the internal emotional state of the individual
• Physiology – combines with internal representations to create a state.
• Behaviour – the result of what the internal processing procedure has told us to do with the external information
