What is the PMP® Credential?

Project Management Professional (PMP)® qualification is an internationally renowned certification that demonstrates project management proficiency, efficacy, and professionalism. Overseen by the Project Management Institute (PMI)®, PMP® training courses encourage the acquisition of knowledge concerning how to lead and direct successful projects from start to finish.

As the world’s most sought-after and popular project management certification, PMP® certification is imperative for aspiring Project Managers to acquire and consolidate their knowledge of how to successfully manage a project - from resource expenditure to managing stakeholder requirements. PMP® certification class is based on "The Project Management Body of Knowledge Guidance" (PMBOK® Guide) that delineates the fundamental functions and processes within project management practice.

The PMI® suggests that project management proficiency was formerly negotiated by the possession of technical skills, however, given the enhanced complexity of the global marketplace, a new emphasis has been placed on technical project management skills, leadership and motivation skills, and strategic business management competencies. This shift towards a desire for more holistically rounded Project Managers means that professionals need to attain and maintain PMP® certifications to prove their management efficacy and ability to compete with adversity.

PMP® exams are known for its complexity and individuals are expected to conduct significant preparation through undertaking the Exam preparation course, mock exam questions, and completing extensive reading. Given the significant preparation required for the exam, the certification is lauded, valued, and positioned above alternative project management qualifications, as it demonstrates a high level of project management expertise.

What is the PMBOK® Guide?

"The Project Management Body of Knowledge Guidance" (PMBOK® Guide) provides an in-depth understanding of the constituents of the concepts and the underpinning processes that guide project management professionals. The PMBOK® Guide is created through a transparent process that gives every PMI® member the opportunity to contribute to the book’s content - meaning that the book is written by experienced Project Managers that are willing to impart their knowledge of project inputs, tools, techniques, and outputs.

The PMBOK® Guide is not designed for a singular industry and is therefore available for all industries to utilise. Importantly, the PMBOK® Guide provides the framework, rather than the methodology, as it is expected that individual Project Managers will develop their own techniques through experience and personal preference depending on their managing industry. The PMBOK® Guide is split into three dominant sections, including:

A) The initial section concerns the fundamentals of project management - allowing individuals to fully understand the project management framework and appreciate how the framework can be applied to various management situations

B) The second section of the PMBOK® Guide outlines the standard and best practice of project management. This section covers the five process groups including: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.

C) The final section covers the ten Project Management knowledge areas including Project Integration Management, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communications Management, Project Risk Management, Project Procurement Management, Project Stakeholder Management. Substantial attention is given to the processes and how they link to project management tools and techniques that can be used in management practice.
