About Chelmsford

The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated in the London commuter belt which lies 22 miles from Colchester and 32 miles away from Charing Cross, London. Chelmsford has an extensive history which will attract many people. The town’s name originated from ‘Ceolmaer’s ford’ which was close to the High Street stone bridge. Following this, the name Celmeresfort was in the Domesday Book and by the year 1189 it had evolved into Chelmsford. Many settlements from a long time ago have been found in the Springfield suburb, for example settlements from the Neolithic and late Bronze Age were located in Chelmsford. The town was also occupied by Romans and a Roman fort was built in 60AD and some of the town was built. However, the town disappeared for a short period of time following the Romans’ exit of Britain. Although at one point the city experienced a slight decline, it has been highly improved what with the town being situated in the centre of Essex and close to London. This is because it has helped it grow into a much more important distribution and administrative centre. Chelmsford, even though it was originally a market and agricultural town, has become a significant site for industry ever since the 19th century. After 1797, transportation and raw materials decreased dramatically in price meant that malting and milling became the most common industries. However, in the 1850s increasing prosperity made a local market for agricultural machinery. Over the years, many industrial factories were eventually located in Chelmsford. For example, Marconi, Cromptons Electrical Engineering, Hoffmann Ball Bearings and many other companies. Currently, there is a high amount of employment in Chelmsford with around 80,000 people employed commercially. There are two shopping centres, The Meadows and High Chelmer, alongside three retail parks: Homeland Retail Park, Riverside and Chelmer Village.
