History of Cisco

Cisco began as Cisco Systems in 1984, founded by Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner. They worked along with Kirk Lougheed at Stanford University on their first product. It was made up by an exact replica of Standford’s “Blue Box” router and a copy of the university’s multiple-protocol router software that had been stolen. This was then adapted into what became the original Cisco IOS.

Cisco Systems went public in 1990 and was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange with a market capitalisation of $224 million. It was one of the first companies to sell successful routers that support multiple network protocols.
