History of NEBOSH

NEBOSH was created in 1979, operating from the IOSH offices, to meet the growing need for qualifications in the occupational health and safety industry. The first NEBOSH associate and member level examinations took place in 1980, sitting five papers; Law; Behavioural Science; Techniques of Safety Management; Occupational Health and Hygiene and General Science. Just over a year later, the number of members of the NEBOSH board has grown, now including IOSH UK representatives.

In the early 1990s NEBOSH began to separate itself from IOSH, incorporating as a limited company with Companies House in 1992.  In 2006 a major milestone was reached when the 100,000th NEBOSH General Certificate was awarded.
