What is ITIL®?

ITIL® (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is a widely used approach to IT management.

ITIL is an IT Service Management methodology that helps businesses align their IT services to their business and customer needs. Managed by joint venture company AXELOS, ITIL has become the global standard in IT service management, and is used by organisations across the public and private sector around the world. With origins spanning back over 25 years, ITIL ensures businesses focus on their customers by adapting to their needs and facilitating the delivery of high-quality products and services.

ITIL views IT service management in terms of the ‘ITIL Service Lifecycle’. This consists of five stages, each with a defined objective, which cover every part of service management, from the establishing of strategy to the improvement of existing services. Each stage contains a variety of processes and subprocesses which are deemed to be vital to that part of the Service Lifecycle.

The ITIL guidance is supported by a series of certifications that facilitate the ITIL learning process, from introductory principles to advanced knowledge of the entire lifecycle and how its stages fit together.

The ITIL Certifications are currently owned by AXELOS and used by large, medium and small organisations across the world to help improve the efficiency and value of the services they are offering. Each individual process can be adapted individually to offer a flexible approach which caters to the businesses specific needs.
